What is Kyudo?
Kyudo is the art of Japanese archery practiced with traditional equipment and ceremony for the purposes of training the mind, body, and spirit. The bow is drawn according to a standardized form called the Shaho - Hassetsu which is designed to make drawing the bow easy while facilitating a full draw. In addition to individual practice, we shoot in a group of 3 - 5 people according to a standardized form of movement called taihai designed to exhibit harmony and coordination.
Our practice follows the principles established under the Kyudo Association of Canada (KAC) who fall under the International Kyduo Federation (IKYF).
How do I get into Kyudo?
We practice weekly on Wednesdays from 7 - 9 p.m. at Capital Region Archery Club and are happy to teach anyone interested in learning Kyudo during that class.
There is no need for any prior experience or equipment, we provide all the required equipment such as bows, arrows, and gloves to start learning Kyudo. We only ask that you try and wear a white top and black bottom along with socks you don't mind getting dirty.
Capital Region Archery Club is located at 5618 76 Ave NW with parking available in front of the building. The door is protected by a keycard lock, so please let us know if you are coming beforehand so that we can unlock the door and keep an eye out for you.
What fees are required?
As a beginner, you can drop into our weekly class for $10 as long as you are not shooting. Once you have completed the necessary training and are starting to shoot, the fee is $15.
These fees are required for insurance purposes to ensure that everything is covered in the event of an emergency.
If you are interested in practicing Kyudo long term, Capital Region Archery Club offers a membership that covers 24/7 access to the range and free lessons in a variety of archery styles along with events throughout the year. Details about membership can be found here, or just ask us any specific questions you have.
